GESTAR II Seminar Series, Thurs Nov 14th, 12:30pm (hybrid)

Join us for a hybrid seminar by Dr. Veljko Petković, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC)/CISESS, University of Maryland. His talk is titled "Data-driven Precipitation Retrievals: Understanding Uncertainties and Information Content."

Date and Time: Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 12:30pm EST
Join us via Teams Meeting or join us in person: NASA GSFC, Bldg. 33, Rm. E108.

Abstract:
"Data-driven methods offer new ways to leverage observational and simulated products, finding applications across a wide range of remote sensing algorithms. However, the uncertainty and effective information content associated with these methods often remain complex or obscure. This talk will present some data-driven techniques for precipitation retrieval, with a focus on methods for quantifying uncertainties and analyzing the information content inherent in diverse data sources. By assessing sources of error and variability, we aim to enhance the reliability of precipitation estimates across different atmospheric conditions. Additionally, we will discuss how uncertainty quantification can boost the operational utility of data-driven products for climate and hydrological applications."

Biography:
After receiving his PhD. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University in 2017, Veljko Petković joined the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at University of Maryland, College Park. As an Associate Research Scientist, Dr. Petković leads a small group that studies the application of satellite remote sensing in Hydrometeorology. The group actively explores development, implementation, and validation of passive microwave satellite retrievals, data fusion, understanding of uncertainty sources, and maximizing the utilization of remote sensing information content in hydrometeorological applications.
