Congratulations to Jianyu Zheng on his Promotion
Congratulations to Jianyu "Kevin" Zheng (613/UMBC) on his promotion to Assistant Research Scientist!
We caught up with Dr. Zheng to learn more about his research and his hobbies outside of work:
Q: What do you enjoy about your research?
A: I enjoy mining satellite images that capture different atmospheric phenomena that are happening day to day. It gives me inspiration for what scientific questions I could ask and follow with hypotheses and solutions, which is the most interesting part of doing research.
Q: In your spare time, what hobbies or activities keep you busy?
A: I enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities. I like kayaking, swimming, and hiking, with travels to different places during holidays. On regular weekends, I like playing basketball with friends or playing video games on PS5. From time to time, I love cooking and exploring new recipes with my wife."
Additionally, Dr. Zheng led a 2026 paper published in Remote Sensing of Environment:
Citation: Zheng, J., Yu, H., Zhou, Y., Shi, Y., Zhang, Z., Di Biagio, C., Formenti, P., and Smirnov, A. (2026), A novel retrieval of global dust optical depth and effective diameter based on MODIS thermal infrared observations, Remote Sensing of Environment, 332, 115083, doi:10.1016/j.rse.2025.115083.
