Mukherjee awarded AGU Travel Grant
At the 2025 AGU Fall Meeting, held in mid-December in New Orleans, LA, Lipi Mukherjee (613/UMBC) was the recipient of an AGU Faculty Travel Grant. The AGU Faculty Travel Grant is "an NSF-funded program administered by AGU to support faculty participation in the AGU Fall Meeting, with an emphasis on broadening participation and supporting early-career faculty." Recipients receive a travel stipend, along with workshop and networking opportunities.
While at AGU, Dr. Mukherjee presented a poster titled "Remote Sensing of Boundary Layer Cloud Base Height Using Shadow Geometry: Applications Over Land And Ocean," which she authored along with Dr. Dong Wu (NASA/GSFC).
Additionally, Dr. Mukherjee's 2026 paper, "Estimating Cloud Base Height via Shadow-Based Remote Sensing", was published in the journal Remote Sensing, and she provided this overview:
Additionally, Dr. Mukherjee's 2026 paper, "Estimating Cloud Base Height via Shadow-Based Remote Sensing", was published in the journal Remote Sensing, and she provided this overview:
"The paper introduces a single-image, shadow-based remote-sensing technique to estimate cloud base height (CBH) using visible satellite imagery. By converting the horizontal displacement between clouds and their shadows into vertical height using solar geometry, the method provides a physically based CBH retrieval without relying on stereo imagery, lidar, radar, or thermal-infrared assumptions. This makes it especially useful for regions or missions where active sensors or multi-angle observations are unavailable. The approach also demonstrates applicability to high-resolution satellite data."
